Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates
Skip to: |
Featured pictures are images that add significantly to articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or being eye-catching to the point where users will want to read its accompanying article. Taking the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words", the images featured on Wikipedia:Featured pictures should illustrate a Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article, according to the featured picture criteria.
If you believe an image should be featured, create a subpage (use the "For Nominations" field, below) and add the subpage to the current nominations section. For promotion, if an image is listed here for ten days with five or more reviewers in support and the consensus is in its favor, it can be added to the Wikipedia:Featured pictures list. Consensus is generally regarded to be a two-thirds majority in support, including the nominator and/or creator of the image; however, anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. All users may comment. However, only those who have been on Wikipedia for 25 days and with at least 100 edits will be included in the numerical count. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis. Nominations started in December are given three extra days, due to the holidays slowing down activity here. The archive contains all opinions and comments collected for candidate nominations and their nomination results. If you nominate an image here, please consider also uploading and nominating it at Commons to help ensure that the pictures can be used not just in the English Wikipedia but on all other Wikimedia projects as well.
A featured picture can be nominated for delisting if you feel it no longer lives up to featured picture standards. You may also request a featured picture be replaced with a superior image. Create a subpage (use the "For Delists" field, below) and add the subpage to the current nominations section. Please leave a note on the talk page of the original FPC nominator (and creator/uploader, if appropriate) to let them know the delisting is being debated. The user may be able to address the issues and avoid the delisting of the picture. For delisting, if an image is listed here for ten days with five or more reviewers supporting a delist or replace, and the consensus is in its favor, it will be delisted from Wikipedia:Featured pictures. Consensus is generally regarded to be a two-thirds majority in support, including the nominator. Note that anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. However, images are sometimes delisted despite having fewer than five in support of their removal, and there is currently no consensus on how best to handle delist closures, except that:If the image to be delisted is not used in any articles by the time of closure, it must be delisted. If it is added to articles during the nomination, at least one week's stability is required for the nomination to be closed as "Kept". The nomination may be suspended if a week hasn't yet passed to give the rescue a chance. Outside of the nominator, all voters are expected to have been on Wikipedia for 25 days and to have made a minimum of 100 edits. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis. As with regular nominations, delist nominations are given three extra days to run if started in December.

Is my monitor adjusted correctly? In a discussion about the brightness of an image, it is necessary to know if the computer display is properly adjusted. Displays differ greatly in their ability to show shadow detail. There are four dark grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display shadow detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings. Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal shadow detail. Please take this into account when voting. Displays also differ greatly in their ability to show highlight detail. There are light grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display highlight detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings (probably reduce the contrast setting). Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal highlight detail. Please take this into account when voting. On a gamma-adjusted display, the four circles in the color image blend into the background when seen from a few feet (roughly 75–150 cm) away. If they do not, you could adjust the gamma setting (found in the computer's settings, not on the display), until they do. This may be very difficult to attain, and a slight error is not detrimental. Uncorrected PC displays usually show the circles darker than the background. Note that the image must be viewed in original size (263 × 68 pixels) - if enlarged or reduced, results are not accurate. Note that on most consumer LCD displays (laptop or flat screen), viewing angle strongly affects these images. Correct adjustment on one part of the screen might be incorrect on another part for a stationary head position. Click on the images for more technical information. If possible, calibration with a hardware monitor calibrator is recommended. |

- A fine image - that crinoline dress was a nightmare to clean the dust from, but worth it, I think - taken reasonably close to the time of their 1862 wedding to each other. 1862 is relatively early photography, so I'd say this is pretty good for the era.

- It's quite a nice image of her in a character role without heavy makeup (She's most famous as the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz). While not the first image in the article, it probably could be, and, while I don't think this Sid-and-Marty-Krofft production is that famous nowadays, it was a pretty major role. I haven't waited seven days; I don't think it's a controversial addition, and the article was hardly over-illustrated, nor is it incredibly active (averages about an edit a week over the last year, though that's inflated by the cases where one editor makes 3-5 small edits over a few minutes)

- I need to talk this one through: On the one hand, this was originally a photographic plate, so the limit of detail is somewhere a little smaller than the film grain size (since the film grains don't form a grid, so the conversion to grid is going to eat detail if it's too close to film grain size).
- It's not sharp, but I'm not sure if that's JPEG artefacting, resolution, or just that X-ray diffraction isn't a photograph of a straight line.
- It's relatively small dimensions (858 × 858) which might be reasonable if this is a tiny spot on a photographic plate, or might be horrible. I don't know. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.8% of all FPs. 21:31, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Needs a US copyright tag.Really not sure we need the table or leg (?) at the bottom. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 16:17, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Chris, the copyright tag covers US, no? Says "is in the public domain both in Brazil and in the United States". I am fine with the composition, and pixel count (per historic exception), if the copyright is PD. Bammesk (talk) 17:33, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'd say the tag covers the URAA situation better than any new tag could. I presume, given the Brazilian National Archive has declared it public domain, that it's considered a non-artistic photographic portrait - and the composition with his crossed leg at the bottom, a background that looks like auditorium seating, and so on, kind of leans into that explanation. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.8% of all FPs. 17:52, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- (ec) You're right. Still not quite sure I think the composition is up to snuff, especially since the aspect ratio isn't quite something I'd expect for a historical image. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 17:53, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- About the aspect ratio, I am pretty sure the negative covered more area, and the print crops the sides (perhaps other people were seated there or etc.). It's an unusual crop, but sometimes that's interesting though. The crop kind of matches his expression, I think. Bammesk (talk) 18:33, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've always felt that photographs from underrepresented countries have a certain added value. This is far above the quality for most authors listed under pt:Lista de membros da Academia Brasileira de Letras. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.8% of all FPs. 18:02, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose It's a good Commons FP, but don't actually think this image should be the lead image in an encyclopaedia. It portrays a very old lion. I prefer something more like The Lion King. When it was substituted as lead image, the photographer stated 'by Community consensus'. There wasn't any consensus. Charlesjsharp (talk) 11:57, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry but this is very untrue. The lion was only between 7 and 9 years old when the picture was taken (2020) which is not a "very old lion" as you pretend.
- Also, in my opinion the picture you linked is of much lower encyclopedic value then the actual one because : 1) the photo you linked is of much lower resolution ; 2) the lion in the photo you linked is facing away (second eye almost not visible, half the face missing).
- Finally, only support votes without any oppose is consensus whether you like it or not. Also let me remind you that you're actually the one replacing images in the Lion article to put your own images without any community consensus. Examples : 1, 2, 3, 4 -- Giles Laurent (talk) 17:08, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Your own vote plus one other on a talk page that few visit is not a consensus. Wikipedia does not require a consensus to replace an image in an article. Charlesjsharp (talk) 15:12, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- I pinged the user who told me to bring that subject to the talk page and he didn't oppose once he saw all arguments in favor. Another user also supported. The edit was performed after over 3 weeks after the discussion was started to let any eventual oppose speak. There were only supports and no oppose in that deadline. Like it or not, that is a consensus. If wikipedia doesn't require consensus to edit featured articles then I don't see why you tried to make a story out of it with your first message. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 16:42, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- Not so. He was born in 2010 so was age 9 or 10 and well past his prime. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:57, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- He was between 10 and 13 according to the Washington Post when he died so he was between 7 and 10 when photographed. You're now referring to lion prime and mane. According to your own article this lion was on his prime since his mane is extremely impressive (much more then the picture you linked in my opinion : color, length, thickness and overall mane appearance) and this would also mean that the age would be between 6 and 8 according to your article -- Giles Laurent (talk) 22:42, 23 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Charlesjsharp and Giles Laurent: If I might put in my opinion - and you can agree or disagree as you see fit:
- First of all, let's look at the before and after images:
- The replaced image was File:Lion_waiting_in_Namibia.jpg. This image has a good thumbnail, arguably slightly better æsthetics than Giles' image, but objectively, is blurry - even though it's somewhat low resolution - and is nowhere near FP quality.
- Giles' image, on technical grounds, is excellent. Sharp, well-lit, good composition, high resolution. It does seem to be a slightly shaggy-maned, older lion.
- Now, let's ask some questions about what the lead image should do:
- It should draw people into the article. This can be by identifying the subject, looking good, or a lot of other ways. For most articles, it should be an initial introduction to the subject, but few subjects are narrow enough to have one image fully cover them, and some - certain mathematical subjects with unclear discoverers, say - may not be able to have a particularly compelling or relevant illustration at all.
- It's good to start with a high-quality image, so people looking for images of a subject will be encouraged to check out the other images in the article. This is a lesser criteria.
- And what it doesn't need to do:
- The first image doesn't have to be the most iconic one. We don't start Margaret Hamilton (actress) with her dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West; the heavy makeup distorts too much, and she did a lot of other things. It can be helpful to slightly challenge an over-simplistic view of a subject early. There's a lot of latitude here.
- It doesn't have to do everything. There's a reason we don't limit images to one or two per article.
- And, while not relevant here, I don't think that the lead image is the only one that can be featured. That just discourages improving the images not in the lead.
- ----
- I'd say that, taken in totality with all the images in the article, the older lion is... a type of lion worth seeing in the article. We want to see a variety of images in the article, otherwise, some are redundant. For example, a lead image for Cat doesn't need to include ginger, tabbies, calico, black, white, long haired, short haired, sphinx, and every other sort of cat out there, but the article as a whole should try to show the variety. Here, we'd reasonably want a few angles, both genders, and a few ages, and a bunch of behaviours. I'd say the article has a decent variety as it stands.
- Hence, I'm voting Support. But I think you're having a dispute over what's the ideal lead image - which there is some reason to do: we don't want the image to disappear from the article in the months before it mainpages, and a poorly-positioned image is more likely to do that. I don't think an older lion is necessarily bad, but that's a judgement call, and I'm not sure that's going to be something that you two are going to agree on, because it's a very subjective point. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.8% of all FPs. 06:21, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Very helpful contribution. Charlesjsharp (talk) 17:32, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

- It's a language of early film we don't have anymore. It's probably meant to emphasise the femininity of her dressing room or something. - Quite small, subject in shadow, and does not actually show flight feathers as well as some other photos like this one, so it doesn't have much identification value. We have another FP of the same species, though that one does not show the bird in flight (but does show both sexes in one image). We actually have another FP of a male in flight, which is better than this one but not that great either. And there is a fourth mallard FP as well, a female with ducklings.

- Gorgeous image of Lower Manhattan,
atwo months before it no longer looked like this. Image is large as well, and I only noted small distortion on a few buildings at the edges of the picture, all the rest are straight from what I've seen. High EV as it depicts a building complex with it's surroundings, justatwo months before they left us. Amazing image overall, especially for 2001. {{FPCresult|Promoted|File:FILENAME.JPG}} --~~~~
- Replace FILENAME.JPG with the name of the file that was promoted. It should show up as:
- Promoted File:FILENAME.JPG
- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Add the image to:
- Template:Announcements/New featured content - newest on top, remove the oldest so that 15 are listed at all times.
- Wikipedia:Goings-on - newest on bottom.
- Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs - newest on top.
- Add the image to the proper sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures - newest on top.
- The caption for a Wikipedian created image should read "Description at Article, by Creator". For a non-Wikipedian, it should be similar, but if the creator does not have an article, use an external link if appropriate. For images with substantial editing by one or more Wikipedians, but created by someone else, use "Description at Article, by Creator (edited by Editor)" (all editors involved should be clear from the nomination). Additionally, the description is optional - if it's essentially the same as the article title, then just use "Article, by Creator". Numerous examples can be found on the various Featured Pictures subpages.
- Add the image to the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures - newest on left and remove the oldest from the right so that there are always three in each section.
- Add the Featured Picture tag and star to the image page using {{Featured picture|page_name}} (replace page_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the page_name from Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/page_name). To add this template you most likely will have to click the "create" button on the upper right if the "edit" button is not present, generally if the image originates from Commons.
- If an edited or alternative version of the originally nominated image is promoted, make sure that all articles contain the Featured Picture version, as opposed to the original.
- Notify the nominator or co-nominators by placing {{subst:PromotedFPC|File:file_name.xxx}} on each nominator's talk page. For example: {{subst:PromotedFPC|File:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}.
- If the image was created by a Wikipedian, place {{subst:UploadedFP|File:file_name.xxx}} on the creator's talk page. For example: {{subst:UploadedFP|File:Blue morpho butterfly.jpg}}.
Then perform the following, regardless of the outcome:
- Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for three days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Page name}}
to the top of the section. - Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the December archive. This is done by simply adding the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Page name}}
from this page to the bottom of the archive. - If the nomination is listed at Template:FPC urgents, remove it.
Delist closing procedure
[edit]Note that delisting an image does not equal deleting it. Delisting from Featured pictures in no way affects the image's status in its article/s.
If consensus is to KEEP featured picture status, and the image is used in at least one article, perform the following:
- Check that the image has been in the article for at least one week. Otherwise, suspend the nomination to give it time to stabilize before continuing.
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Kept|}} --~~~~
- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Optionally leave a note on the picture's talk page.
If consensus is to DELIST, or the image is unused (and consensus is not for a replacement that is used), perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Delisted|}} --~~~~
- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Replace the
{{Featured picture}}
tag from the image with{{FormerFeaturedPicture|delist/''Image name''}}
. - Remove the image from the appropriate sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures and the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs.
If consensus is to REPLACE (and at least one of the images is used in articles), perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FPC/delist/subpage:
{{FPCresult|Replaced|}} with File:NEW_IMAGE_FILENAME.JPG --~~~~
- Do NOT put any other information inside the FPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
- Replace NEW_IMAGE_FILENAME.JPG with the name of the replacement file.
- Replace the
{{Featured picture}}
tag from the delisted image with{{FormerFeaturedPicture|delist/''Image name''}}
. - Update the replacement picture's tag, adding the tag {{Featured picture|delist/image_name}} (replace image_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the image_name from Wikipedia:Featured_picture_candidates/delist/image_name). Remove any no longer applicable tags from the original, replacement and from any other alternatives. If the alternatives were on Commons and no longer have any tags, be sure to tag the description page with {{missing image}}.
- Replace the delisted Featured Picture in all articles with the new replacement Featured Picture version. Do NOT replace the original in non-article space, such as Talk Pages, FPC nominations, archives, etc.
- Ensure that the replacement image is included on the appropriate sub-page of Wikipedia:Featured pictures and the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs. Do this by replacing the original image with the new replacement image; do not add the replacement as a new Featured Picture.
Then perform the following, regardless of the outcome:
- Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for three days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Image name}}
to the top of the section. - Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the archived delist nominations. This is done by simply adding the line
{{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/delist/Image name}}
to the bottom of the appropriate section of the archive. - If the nomination is listed at Template:FPC urgents, remove it.

- If I had the reviewer tag, I'd mark it. Unfortunately, I don't, and Commons seems to take several months for reviews like this. - Comment there is an awful lot of fair use imagery in here by the looks of things, including the image of Sean Connery as James Bond and several video games. Has anyone reviewed to ensure that MatPat had the right to release this under a free license? — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:39, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment It is my understanding that the applicable Commons policy here would be de minimis. The focus of the video is not on these elements, and cropping such elements from the video or using them on their own would be problematic. However, the removal/censorship of such content would significantly impact its quality. See commons:COM:DM; I think the applicable criteria here is
Copyrighted work X is identifiable and an unavoidable part of the subject, and is essential to the subject (e.g. removing it would make the file useless) but the work is shown in insufficient detail and/or with insufficient clarity, so de minimis may apply.
Now, the use of these elements is not in low detail or clarity, but each copyrighted image shows up for a few seconds at most in a fifteen-minute video, so I think that qualifies as minimal usage. Di (they-them) (talk) 02:47, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- I can see the argument, but the sheer volume of various items adds up. It's the same reason I nominated one of my own video uploads for deletion after the fact... too much fair use, despite a valid license from the creator. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:02, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- In addition to Chris's concern, I am wondering whether it is possible to change the video thumbnail (I don't really know how that works). I am not sure this one meets the spirit of Wikipedia:Logos. The logo may be used for acceptable commentary within the video, but it is not being used that way in the articles in which the thumbnail appears. I am honestly also a little skeptical of the de minimis claim here. Regarding featuring, I think I land on oppose, as criterion 4, if it is met, is met only barely and arguably. blameless 19:28, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

- Support Original, the original is now restored as well (by Yann). It has the original tone. It is well preserved, so I see no reason to remove the tone and convert to grayscale. Oppose Alt 1, photo is well preserved, therefore removing the tone is original research FP criterion #6. Bammesk (talk) 17:46, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- Saying that a grayscale version is original research is quite farfetched IMO, since this is originality a black and white picture, and that the tone was added later. Yann (talk) 12:22, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- "WP:Original research" means there is no source to support this was originally published in grayscale. Plus no indication the color tone is an unintended defect. Even in modern times some B&W photos are published with a color tone [2][3]. Bammesk (talk) 16:04, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- And where is the evidence that the tone is original? The picture comes from Internet Archive, not a primary source. Sorry, but this looks like a strawman argument to me. Yann (talk) 09:44, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- I have no reason to doubt Internet Archive [4], because a color tone on an older photo isn't unusual, example [5]. You wrote: "the tone was added later", and I challenged this assertion. That's not a straw man argument. Bammesk (talk) 04:25, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- I would agree if the picture comes from a GLAM, or we can see the original print, but that's not the case here. Yann (talk) 18:27, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- No problem. I go with the "Original" and oppose "Alt 1" because it's unsourced and I don't see a convincing rationale for it. The Internet Archive copy comes from the collection of a private photographer/archivist. That's as good as doctormacro.com and ebay where we get some of our FPs from [6][7][8]. - Oppose as a set. The male image is unacceptably noisy. MER-C 11:56, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose Yes, male is long way short of FP. Not 'High Quality' as claimed. Very surprised anyone is supporting this nom @Crisco 1492, Hounaam, and Hamid Hassani:: Can you please have another look. Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Neutral on female, oppose male. blameless 22:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose male too noisy, and Support female – I think we can split the candidates. If we can't split them, then the female can be re-nominated by itself. Bammesk (talk) 18:24, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Cowboygilbert, Crisco 1492, Hamid Hassani, and Hounaam: It looks like currently only the female has consensus to be promoted. Would you be okay with that? Regards, Armbrust The Homunculus 23:49, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm fine with that. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:11, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
